Worcester Bosch Fault Codes — What They Mean

Worcester Bosch boilers show a fault code on the display when something goes wrong. These are the codes we're called out to most often, and whether it's a DIY reset or an engineer job.

Codes vary between models. The above covers the Greenstar i, CDi Classic and Greenstar Life ranges.
Code What it means Can you fix it?
EA / EA 229 No flame detected — the boiler tried to light but failed Check the gas supply is on (other gas appliances working?). Try one reset. If it recurs, call an engineer — often the gas valve, electrodes or a flue fault.
E9 Overheating — safety thermostat has tripped Engineer required. Usually poor circulation, a failed pump or a sludged system. Do not keep resetting.
C1 Fan speed fault — fan not running correctly Engineer required — fan testing and usually replacement.
CE / C6 Fan or communication fault Engineer required.
EF / F0 Internal (PCB) fault Engineer required. Often a control board fault.
E5 Flow sensor over-temperature Engineer required — sensor or circulation fault.
A1 Pump running dry / low water / poor circulation Check system pressure first. If pressure is fine, call an engineer — often a stuck pump or airlock.
d1 / low pressure System water pressure has dropped too low Often yes — repressurise via the filling loop to 1–1.5 bar. If it keeps dropping, you have a leak and need an engineer.
A / low water Low water pressure warning Repressurise as above. Persistent loss means a leak or a failed expansion vessel — engineer required.
229 Flame loss during operation Try one reset. If it recurs, engineer required — gas supply, gas valve or condensate blockage.
1602 / 1608 Condensate or flue fault (frozen condensate common in winter) A frozen condensate pipe is sometimes a DIY thaw, but if you're unsure, call us — it's often a same-day fix.

Important: if your Worcester boiler locks out repeatedly, stop resetting it. Repeated resets on a boiler with an underlying fault — especially an E9 overheat or an EA ignition failure — can cause further damage and, with gas faults, are a safety risk. Call us and we'll diagnose it properly.

Worcester Bosch Boiler Repairs

We repair all current and most legacy Worcester Bosch models, including the Greenstar i, Greenstar CDi Classic, Greenstar Life, Greenstar Si, Greenstar Highflow, Greenstar Heatslave (oil), and older Greenstar Ri and Junior models.

Our vans carry a substantial stock of common Worcester parts, so the majority of repairs are completed on the first visit rather than needing a return trip.

Common Worcester Bosch problems we're called out to:

• No heating or hot water

• EA / ignition lockout needing repeated resets

• E9 overheating and safety cut-outs

• Losing pressure — usually a leak or a failed expansion vessel

• Leaking from the boiler or condensate pipe

• Frozen condensate pipe (very common in cold snaps — often a same-day fix)

• Hot water running lukewarm or fluctuating (common on Greenstar combis)

• Boiler kettling, banging, or gurgling

• Radiators not heating properly

No call-out fee. You pay for the work carried out, not for us turning up. No subscriptions, no maintenance contracts — a one-off repair service for people who'd rather pay when they need us.

Worcester Bosch Boiler Servicing

An annual service keeps your Worcester boiler running at its rated efficiency, catches wear before it becomes a breakdown, and protects your warranty. Worcester Bosch warranties — up to 12 years on some Greenstar models — require the boiler to be serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer, with the service documented. Miss a year and you risk a declined warranty claim.

What our Worcester Bosch boiler service includes:

Our engineer will arrive with a Gas Safe ID card — always ask to see it, from us or anyone else working on your gas appliances. The service then covers:

Boiler casing removed for a full internal inspection

Heat exchanger inspected and cleaned — the most common site of scale build-up and the most expensive component to replace

Flue gas analysis to confirm the boiler is burning correctly and operating safely

Gas pressure and gas rate checked against Worcester's specification

All safety controls tested — pressure relief valve, thermostat, and flame supervision

Pipework inspected for corrosion, leakage, or poor support

Condensate trap cleaned and the run checked for freeze risk

System pressure and expansion vessel checked and recharged if needed

Written service record issued for your warranty protection

Price: from £CALL — flat rate, no hidden extras. Takes around 45 minutes to an hour. Same-day and next-day appointments are usually available.

Why regular servicing pays for itself

A boiler that hasn't been serviced gradually loses efficiency as the heat exchanger fouls and combustion drifts out of tolerance — and that shows up directly in your energy bills. A single failed component caught at a service — a worn pump, a sticking valve, a corroded seal — is almost always cheaper to fix than the breakdown it would have caused in the middle of January.

Central Heating & Hot Water

A Worcester boiler is one part of a system. When you've lost heating or hot water, the fault isn't always the boiler itself — it can be the pump, a motorised valve, the thermostat, a blocked heat exchanger, or sludge in the pipework restricting flow.

We diagnose the whole system rather than replacing parts speculatively. Common central heating work we carry out alongside Worcester Bosch repair:

• Radiators cold at the bottom or not heating at all

Powerflushing to clear sludge and restore circulation

pump and motorised valve replacement

• Thermostat and smart control installation

• Cylinder and immersion faults affecting hot water

• Leakage tracing on concealed pipework

Need a New Boiler Instead?

If your Worcester boiler is beyond economic repair — a failed heat exchanger, obsolete parts, or simply age — a replacement is often the better investment. We install the full Greenstar range with free written quotations and guarantee registration.

See our Worcester Bosch boiler installation page for details, or call 07904 847 696 to discuss your options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Worcester Bosch boiler repair cost in London?

It depends on the fault and any parts needed. We charge no call-out fee, so you only pay for the work carried out. We give you a price before starting and won't proceed without your agreement.

How much is a Worcester Bosch boiler service?

Our standard Worcester service is £, flat rate, with no hidden extras. It takes around 45 minutes to an hour.

My Worcester boiler is showing EA — what does that mean?

EA means the boiler tried to ignite but no flame was detected. First check your gas supply is on and other gas appliances work. Try one reset. If it locks out again, stop resetting and call an engineer — it's usually the gas valve, electrodes, or a flue issue.

My Worcester boiler shows low pressure and keeps dropping — can I fix it?

You can repressurise it via the filling loop to 1–1.5 bar, but if the pressure keeps falling there's a leak in the system or a failed expansion vessel, and you'll need an engineer to trace it.

Do you service Worcester boilers to keep the warranty valid?

Yes. Worcester warranties require annual servicing by a Gas Safe registered engineer, documented — which is exactly what we provide, with a written record after every visit.

Do I need to be tied into a contract?

No. We don't sell subscriptions or maintenance plans. You call us when you need us and pay for that visit.

Can you come out today?

In most cases yes. We aim for a 1-hour response on genuine emergencies and offer same-day appointments for non-emergency work wherever possible.
